WOC are Needed in Fundraising
As I reflect on my fundraising experience for marginalized communities–the communities that made me– I often wonder why it has always been so difficult. Fundraising for underrepresented communities poses unique challenges that require careful consideration. One significant factor contributing to these challenges is the limited resources available to these communities, making it difficult to attract and retain donors. Many would think that the quick fix would be to hire a fundraising team that reflects the community they are serving, however, this does not always remedy what remains to be true. Biases and stereotypes can play a detrimental role in shaping how diverse fundraisers and their efforts are perceived by potential donors, impacting their ability to secure support. It becomes an uphill battle, from whatever angle you look at it.
Moreover, the underrepresentation of diverse leaders, particularly, women of color in leadership positions, further compounds the difficulties they face in influencing fundraising strategies and priorities. In 2020, women of color represented only 4% of executive directors and 9% of board members in nonprofit organizations (Building Movement Project, 2020) This lack of representation hinders their ability to properly advocate for the specific needs of these underrepresented communities. So what then, is the answer? Or at least, a partial one.
Diversify With Intention– It is imperative that organizational leaders begin to diversify their development means with intention. They must create decision-making, influential, and dynamic seats at the table and some of these seats need to be reserved for leaders who can speak to the communities they serve. Studies show that organizations with diverse leadership, including women of color, are more successful at fundraising (Chronicle of Philanthropy, 2018)
Go Where We Are Welcome– It is crucial for women of color fundraisers to seek out spaces that celebrate our unique identities and harness our power. By leveraging our own lived experiences and connections within underrepresented communities, we can establish trust and cultivate strong relationships with donors. This authentic connection enables fundraisers to communicate the specific needs and challenges faced by our communities effectively.
Step Into Our Magic– Women of Color fundraisers bring valuable innovation and creativity to the table. Our perspectives and insights enable organizations to think outside the box and develop strategies that are tailored to the unique needs and preferences of our communities.
Fundraising for underrepresented communities requires a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities within these communities. It is essential for WOC fundraisers to seek spaces where we are accepted and celebrated, embracing our magic and power. Let us not allow our fears or past experiences to hinder us from pursuing the opportunities we deserve. I urge you to be courageous and authentically yourself. By leveraging our lived experiences and connections within underrepresented communities, we can establish trust and foster strong relationships with donors. Through our determination, we can raise awareness about the specific needs and challenges faced by our communities, ultimately garnering support and driving meaningful impact.
